The current threats and issues that the Komodo National Park deal with differ between species and the states of the ecosystems from with they are from. The Komodo National Park is the leading contributor to the maintaining and reintroduction plans for many endangered species such as the orange-footed fowl, the Timor deer and a number of endemic rodents. Underwater the situation is different, the main focuses on marine life are combating the over fishing of commercial species and the protection of the damage in which these dramatic declines in biomass inflict upon these unstable ecosystems and protection of coral and all marine life from the destructive and indiscriminate techniques that are often employed in Indonesia such as dynamite, cyanide and indiscriminate netting methods that collect far more unwanted fish then the target fish. Coral environments have evolved to respond only to very slow changes in their environment and this kind of destructive practice has to be combated. The Komodo National Park‘s focus underwater is concentrated the coral reefs themselves, the mangroves, seabed grasses, semi enclosed bays and seamounts, all of which are represented from with the respective areas of the park.

Unlike common rice fields in Indonesia (and the rest of the world), the rice field in Cancar, Ruteng is very unique. When viewed up close, it is just similar to common rice field. However, when viewed from above, the paddy fields in Cancar look like a spider web. Lucky that Cancar is surrounded by hills, so we got a best place to see the spider web rice fields.

This spider web rice field is a customary tradition Manggarai Regency society in terms of the distribution of paddy fields and gardens called Lingko. Lingko is customary land that is owned together by the society, then shared individually and used them together to meet society’s need. Conforming to the Ngada adat, each clan owns its own sao pu’u (original or ‘trunk’ house), a sa’o lobo (youngest or ‘tip’ house), a ngadhu, and a bhaga ancestral shrine. Up to the present day, the staple crops grown by the inhabitants of Gurusina are corn, tubers, coconut, and banana, as well as coffee, cloves, candlenut, and cocoa as popular cash crops. Ikat weaving is an important daily activity for Gurusina women.

Bena Traditional Village, a community that is situated about 16km from Bajawa at the foot of Mount Inerie, is the most famous and also most visited village in the Ngada district. With its impressive stone formations and ancestral shrines, as well as traditional houses, Bena has turned into a signpost for Ngada culture. The village consists of two parallel rows of traditional, high thatch-roofed houses. Highly visible in the center of the village are ngadhu and bhaga, pairs of shrines – one for each clan of the village – representing the clan’s ancestors. The ngadhu is an anthropomorphic umbrella-like pole embodying the male ancestor of a clan. The trunk is decorated with carvings and is topped with a warrior-like figure. The ngadhu symbolizes fierceness and virility. After a new ngadhu has been carved out of a special tree, the men of the village carry the pole in a ceremonial way into the village.

Mount Kelimutu, with its tri-colored crater lakes, is probably the most amazing natural phenomenon in Flores. Beyond that, the ‘steaming mountain’ is also the island’s most famous tempat angker, or mystical, haunted place.

Scientific explanations aside, there are many myths about the origin of Kelimutu. This is one of the reasons why Mount Kelimutu was, and still is a sacred place for the local people. Over the years, the three crater lakes have often changed color. At present, one of the lakes is black-brown, one is green, and one is currently changing from green to a reddish color. A reason may be the varying mineral contents of the water. Another explanation suggests that the changing colors are caused by the neglected ancestral souls
